Kiehl is the nephew of the Mary and John Morton Daggett and is working in an Army hospital in Camp Keys "tending on the Sick." It appears that John Morton Daggett is something of a horse connoisseur as Kiehl (as well as all the Kelley relatives) repeatedly write him about the nature and quality of their mounts. He also details a recent battle: "…we was in an other little fight a few days ago. We sent out a Scout of one hundred men and they came across two hundred Rebels and they had a pretty brisk time for Awhile. But our men whipped them at last. There was two or three of the rebles killed and twelve or fifteen wounded. We had none killed. They are in the hospital here at this time. They are getting along fine. I would have writen sooner had it not been for the sick and wounded taking all my time to attend to them and even now I will not have time to write very much." Although very busy in the hospital, Kiehl sees the bright side of his situation: "I have got along fine this winter but now comes Summer the nice time for Soldiering."
