518. A Bulgarian Heraldic Carpet, Early 20th Century
Woven as a large shield surmounted by a crown, centered by a small shield with a side view of a crowned lion, surmounted by a crown and flanked by sideways lions with cocked, masked faces and flags on poles, the area below woven as horizontal scrolling vines. Below the large shield is a banner reading left to right "Cedenenyeto, Prava, Celata", "Unity, Rule, Power", dated lower left "1919 October 3", and "Cevas" lower right, all in red, black, yellow, brown, and greenish beige. 44" x 72".

519. A Persian Carpet, Portrait of George V, Early 20th Century
Woven as a portrait of George V in military garb. Above his head reads the phrase "His Majesty King George V", all inside an oval woven with cartouches stating phrases in cufic script and bordered by flowers, the four corners woven with roses, all in tan, shades of brown, navy, teal, and creme. Wool and silk pile on cotton warp. 25" x 34".

This piece was probably woven originally as the back side of a juval, or bag. Flat woven with a center strip pile woven with two rectangular guls and small geometric motifs, all in beige, red, orange, and black. Wool pile and wool weft on wool warp. 19" x 30".

Flat woven in alternating strips of geometric motifs, the primary strips woven with pronounced hexagons, each centered by crossed arrows, the secondary strips woven with zig-zag and diamond motifs, all in navy, salmon, light blue, yellow, creme, and green. Wool warp on wool weft. 47" x 73".
