| 529. A Chinese Pictorial Carpet, Late 19th/Early 20th Century
Woven as a horizontal landscape of pagodas and cherry blossom trees, some with flowers, some without, in front of a mountainous horizon, above woven birds and layered landscape, all in black, tan, muted red and green, and various shades of brown. Signed lower left. Wool pile on cotton warp. 68" x 100".
Note: The birds woven in the central lower portion of the carpet were probably woven in a very similar creme color as the background. Over time due to wear and fading, the birds are difiicult to see unless one looks very closely, however the red used in weaving the eyes and beaks is still vibrant and helps to bring out the faded silhouettes.
1,000/2,000
Condition: pile low, some staining and discoloration, one major patch repair near top center.
