Illustration of an entryway on the Campidoglio designed by Michaelangelo, on print: "In Campidoglio nella nuova fabrica d'inventione de Michel Angelo; XXXXII." Mat size: 18 x 16, image size: 9 3/4 x 7 3/4.Edwards was an English naturalist who served as librarian of the Royal College of Physicians from 1733. He drew animals for Sir Hans Sloane and was taught by Mark Catesby how to etch the plates for his own natural history books--of which the present lot is a fine example.

23. Bessa, Pancrace (French, 1772-1846) Fine Handcolored Engraving of Pine Cone, circa 1804-25
PINUS MARITIMA. T. 5. No. 72. Drawn by Bessa and engraved by Didier. Mat size: 23 5/8" x 20"; image size: 15" x 12". Bessa was a student of the celebrated botanical illustrator Henri Redoute and of the famous flower painter, Gerard van Spaendonck. Bessa specialized in representing flowers and fruits, often collaborating on illustration projects with some of the finest naturalists and botanical draftsmen of the late 18th and early 19th century. He collaborated with Redoute on the illustrations for "Arbres forestiers" by Michaux, a work from which this individual engraving probably derives.

24. Wilson, Alexander (Scottish, 1766-1813) Print of Five Birds Perched on Evergreen Branches
c. 1810 The five birds are numbered one through five and identified at the bottom as: American Crossbill, Female [Crossbill], Whitewinged Crossbill, White-crowned Bunting, and Baywinged B[unting]. On print in lower left corner: "Drawn from nature by A. Wilson", on print in lower right corner: "Engraved by A. Lawsen". Measures 19" x 16" matted, 13 x 9 3/4" image size.Wilson produced the first important work on American ornithology, a nine-volume study published between 1808 and 1824. It is generally considered that Wilson's descriptions of birds are better than Audubon's.
