Engraved on print: "The black throated green fly catcher and the black and white fly catcher; boath from Pensilvania. Drawn from nature of the size of life, by George Edwards, August the 26 AD 1757. 300." Mat size: 18 x 16, image size: 9 3/4 x 7 3/4.Edwards was an English naturalist who served as librarian of the Royal College of Physicians from 1733. He drew animals for Sir Hans Sloane and was taught by Mark Catesby how to etch the plates for his own natural history books--of which the present lot is a fine example.
