| 23. Bessa, Pancrace (French, 1772-1846) Fine Handcolored Engraving of Pine Cone, circa 1804-25
PINUS MARITIMA. T. 5. No. 72. Drawn by Bessa and engraved by Didier. Mat size: 23 5/8" x 20"; image size: 15" x 12". Bessa was a student of the celebrated botanical illustrator Henri Redoute and of the famous flower painter, Gerard van Spaendonck. Bessa specialized in representing flowers and fruits, often collaborating on illustration projects with some of the finest naturalists and botanical draftsmen of the late 18th and early 19th century. He collaborated with Redoute on the illustrations for "Arbres forestiers" by Michaux, a work from which this individual engraving probably derives.
