346. Hubbell, Charles H.
Eight Fully Illustrated Aviation Calendars and Hubbell's Book "Panorama of Flight"

Cleveland: Thompson Products, Inc./TRW, Inc.,
Clevelander Charles H. Hubbell is undoubtedly the world's best known artist-historian of the Air Age. This lot includes eight Hubbell-illustrated Aviation Calendars (26" x 16 1.2".) Most calendars were published by Thompson Products, Inc. The 1971 calendar was published by TRW, Inc.1941: DAWN OF WINGS. Like the sky itself, the genius of aviation's early pioneers know no boundary of race or country. These men shared in common the gift of vision and courage that brought the Dawn of Wings.1946: FOR THE RECORD. Here, for the record, are the best planes the enemy sent into the air. Their fortunes rode high until Democracy unleashed its full might and swept them from the skies.1947: WORLD WAR I AIRCRAFT.1948: VARIOUS STYLES OF AIRCRAFT 1920S THROUGH 1940S.1950: THE NEW BREED. On the air bases and carriers of America their number grows- a new and deadlier breed. Jet-propelled, odd of wing, awesome in speed and attack, they warn of America's industrial might, and of the will of her people to remain free. 1951: MATS- USAF. In times of peace and war the Military Air Transport Service, USAF, is the Great Workhorse of the Skies. It performs tasks of transport, airlift, rescue, communication and myriad daily chores for our Armed Forces wherever they may be. Poised for every emergency, "MATS" flies 70,000 miles of airways, from bases that span the world- a mighty pillar of National Security.1952: BEFORE KITTY HAWK. These were men of vision and of faith and prophecy, before Kitty Hawk. They built of stick and wire. Their runways were the sand dunes and the hillsides. They were the symbol of man's ageless yearnings to soar free of the earth. Illustrations of pre-airplane flying machines.1953: SALUTE TO A GIANT. They have freed the traveler from the earth. Their routes in the skies trace a 400,000-mile network that has shrunk the world to a neighborhood. In a single generation they have grown to a giant of the Air Age, and of transportation- mighty in times of peace and war. We salute the Scheduled Airlines of America, and the great industries that gave them wing and motor.1971: VARIOUS STYLES OF AIRCRAFT FROM 1908 TO 1959. Hubbell, Charles. PANORAMA OF FLIGHT: AVIATION HISTORY IN PAINTINGS. Thomas Products, Inc.: 1953.

350. Caniff, Milton
Hand-Watercolored Cartoon of Female Figure "Normandie"

New York: November 2, 1939
The "Rembrandt of the Comics," Milton Caniff is responsible for creating two masterpieces of graphic adventure, Terry and the Pirates in 1934 and Steve Canyon in 1947. His cinematic sense of composition and bold use of light and shadow influenced generations of illustrative comic artists, revolutionizing the style of the story strip. Caniff's richly woven plots, exotic settings and memorable characters also established him as one of greatest storytellers ever to work in the comics. An original founder of the National Cartoonists Society and the winner of its Reuben Award as the best cartoonist of the year in 1946 and 1971, Milton Caniff worked until his death in 1988, a significant force in cartooning for more than half a century.

352. Caniff, Milton
Autographed Letter and Cartoon of Two Female Figures "Burma" and "Dragon Lady"

New York: November 2, 1939
Some time in 1939, a ten-year old girl in Berwyn, Illinois wrote to famed cartoonist Milton Caniff in care of her local newspaper, The Chicago Tribune. The Tribune, apparently, forwarded her letter to Caniff in New York. The girl's letter reads: " Dear Milton Caniff; Would you please print a paper doll of the Dragon Lady or April Cane in the Sunday tribune. I like them both but I like the Dragon Lady a little better than April Cane, though. Would you please print one. Terry and the Pirates is my favorite funny. Thank you very much! Your sincere reader, age 10." It is unknown whether Caniff published a paper doll in the Sunday Chicago Tribune, but he did something even better for his "sincere reader." He sent her four colored sketches (on three 7 1/2" x 4" sheets) of "Normandie," "Burma" and "The Dragon Lady" on one sheet (the present lot], and "Pat Ryan" inscribed to her "with my very best wishes, Milton Caniff. November 2, 1939." In very good condition. Lot includes original letter and envelope from girl; envelope and stamp from Caniff plus sketch.
