His cinematic sense of composition and bold use of light and shadow influenced generations of illustrative comic artists, revolutionizing the style of the story strip. Caniff's richly woven plots, exotic settings and memorable characters also established him as one of greatest storytellers ever to work in the comics. An original founder of the National Cartoonists Society and the winner of its Reuben Award as the best cartoonist of the year in 1946 and 1971, Milton Caniff worked until his death in 1988, a significant force in cartooning for more than half a century.
