This print is the first in the artist's Cathedral series. Inspired by the work of impressionist painter Claude Monet, Lichtenstein used Monet's haystack imagery and cathedral imagery as the basis for two series of prints in the late 1960s. Like Monet, he used the same object in numerous images but shifted his palette to produce endless variations on a theme.
This print was printed at Gemini G. E. L., Los Angeles, in 2 colors in 2 runs, from 1 aluminum plate and 1 screen. The yellow was done through lithography and the white through screen printing.
