249. A Saxony Enamel Box, circa 1770

The hinged lid rectangular form enameled with a scene of courting lovers enclosed within a raised white enamel scroll frame, the sides painted with landscapes enclosed within similar frames on a pale pink ground, opening to reveal an interior painted with a scene of a young woman repelling the advances of her amorous admirer.

Decorated in the style of Watteau, the rectangular form decorated on all sides with scenes of colorful young ladies and suitors in floral gardens, painted en grisaille, the borders and reserves enameled in gilt, the underside decorated with a colorful floral spray, the interior cover with a gentleman serenading a lady, and a conch shell on the bottom interior.
