| 311. A Wonderful Turkish Oushak Carpet, 19th Century
The central field woven in two main sections, the large portion woven with a horizontal row of five mihrabs (prayer niches) that are also stylized cypress trees sprouting from bases. Each tree-niche is woven with unique motifs including geometric and plant imagery. The weave continues as vertical trees with branches and stylized leaves above the center, far left, and far right tree-niches; the spaces above the second and fourth niches are woven with large palmettes and bats, the smaller portion of the central field is woven with a horizontal row of nine prayer niches (in a different style than those in the larger section), also pointing upwards to smaller vertical trees and branches. The primary border consists of numerous stylized motifs including leaf-like palmettes, small flowers, dragons, scorpions, and other insects, all in creme, pink, coral, orange, bluish gray, and brown.
