By the turn of the last century, John Sloan was widely regarded as New York's Hogarth. From his early involvement in the newspaper business, he was a veteran "people watcher". His wry sense of humor is often displayed in energetic little vignettes of the type found in this image. This print is most probably the 8th of 8 states, as listed and reproduced in Peter Morse, John Sloan's Prints - A Raisonee of Etchings Lithographs and Posters, New Haven, Yale University Press, 1969. Sloan included a self portrait and a likeness of Dolly on the left side of the composition.
Condition: very slight mat window mark, slight vertical dimple, old rice paper hinges, current gummed linen tape hinges, three edges deckled and top edge cut.
