| 277. Swinburne, Charles [1837-1909] The Poems of Algernon Charles Swinburne
New York & London: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1904 Octavo. Six Volumes.
Blue cloth with gilt lettering and decoration to spine. Author portrait at frontis. First published in 1865, "Poems and Ballads" [Volume I] created a literary scandal and demonstrated his tendency to shock when he attempted to celebrate physical love and the life of the senses patterned after the ancient Greek lyricists and his French contemporaries. Constituting the five remaining volumes are his works, "Songs Before Sunrise", "Songs of Two Nations", "Poems and Ballads, 2nd and 3rd Series" "Songs of the Springtides", "Tristram of Lyonesse", "The Tale of Balen", "Atalanta in Calydon", "Erechtheus", "Studies in Son", "A Century of Roundels", "Sonnets on English Dramatic Poets", "Heptalogia Etc.", "A Midsummer Holiday", "Astrophel and Other Poems", and "A Channel Passage and Other Poems". Swinburne was a friend of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Morris.
