306. Nicholson, Sir William (1872-1949) The Horse Guards
London: William Heinemann, 1898 Framed Nicholson lithograph: 18" x 17;" image size: 11" x 10." A color woodblock depicting a British military man with accompanying page with text on back. Sir William Nicholson was an extremely versatile and talented artist who studied at Herkomer's Academy in London and at the Academie Julien in Paris. Although he was a painter of portraits, landscapes, still lifes and figures, it was Nicholson's work as an illustrator that brought him the most recognition. Indeed, together with his brother-in-law, James Pryde, Nicholson affected a revival of the art of postermaking and poster design. They called themselves the Beggarstaff Brothers and designed images of great simplicity. Part of the success of their "affiches" was the result of a new process of engraving on wood which they developed. He is particularly well-known for his images of London as well as famous personalities - especially the British royal family.
