Mosgo moved to Cleveland from Johnstown, Pennsylvania in 1923. He worked as an assistant to Nora Dyer who was the ceramics instructor at the Cleveland School of Art, and became her successor when she retired in 1946. Charles Mosgo won awards at nearly every May Show exhibition for over a decade. In his ceramics, Mosgo introduced a look which used less briliiant colors but more sophisticated gradations in the glazes. He tended to prefer round, nearly spherical forms in most of his ceramic work, often pinching the necks of his vessels quite tightly, as in the present lot. He was also involved with textiles and fiber art. He died prematurely at the age of 44, of complications due to epilepsy.
We are grateful to Dr. Henry Adams and Kathleen McKeever of the Cleveland Museum of Art for their assistance in researching this lot.
Condition: excellent.
