Following his art training in New York, Ernest Fiene went to Europe where he worked in both Paris and Florence, and subsequently painted in Mexico as well. In addition to his landscapes, urban scenes, figure paintings and portraits, Fiene also produced lithographs for the Assicated American Artists Group in New York, painted quiet still life subjects (of which the present work is a fine example), and worked as a pastellist.
Fiene exhibited his work widely throughout the course of his career, notably at the Whitney Museum of Art, at the National Academy of Design, at the Carnegie Institute, and at the Pennsylvania Academy. He received numerous prizes and awards for his paintings including a 1938 prize at the Carnegie International, and the Edwin Palmer Memorial Prize from the National Academy of Design in 1944.
Fiene taught painting at the Cooper Union, at the Art Students League, and at the National Academy of Design. He died in Paris.
