623. A Wonderful Art Nouveau Walnut Carved and Inlay Armchair, Attributed to Louis Majorelle (French, 1859-1926)

The finger carved crestrail over a vase shaped back splat with inlaid design of sunflowers and carved detail at each corner, the graceful arms natural flow into twisted legs and joined by a box stretcher.

The wonderful form with inlaid surfaces depicting scrolling foliage, arabesque design, cherubs, urns, and medallions, the front panel centered by a shield flanked by winged horses, and scrolling foliage, the writing slide lined with embossed green leather, over two frieze drawers with brass hardware, raised on square tapering legs ending in spade feet, including a matching chair with inlay banding and an upholstered green leather seat.

The three rectangular pierced back splats each headed by a painted cartouche depicting putto's in an arts and science motif and the lower portion with columns and arches divided by arrows, the down swept arms raised on curved supports with inset matching panel, the loose cushion over a caned seat, and decorated seat rail, raised on eight tapering square legs ending in castors.
