624. A Carlton House Style Satinwood Desk and Chair, Late 19th/Early 20th Century

The wonderful form with inlaid surfaces depicting scrolling foliage, arabesque design, cherubs, urns, and medallions, the front panel centered by a shield flanked by winged horses, and scrolling foliage, the writing slide lined with embossed green leather, over two frieze drawers with brass hardware, raised on square tapering legs ending in spade feet, including a matching chair with inlay banding and an upholstered green leather seat.

The original "Carlton House desk" was made in the 1790s for George IV, then Prince of Wales, for his London residence, Carlton House. There are many variations of the desk, which is essentially a small bureau plat with a low horseshoe arrangement of drawers to hold writing utensils. It was a favorite form of 19th-century cabinetmakers.

Condition: minor wear around key holes, minor lifting to veneer, lacking small piece of veneer, chair backrail split.
