1. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858).
The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido.

The featured work in our July Book, Print and Map Auction is a complete lifetime printing of Hiroshige's masterwork, "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road." This set of the famous series of fifty-five woodblock prints was printed from the original woodblocks in oban format, and was published by Takenouchi Magohachi (Hoeido). The bright, unfaded impressions are folded and bound in brown paper covers with a handwritten title slip.


PROVENANCE: Unidentified Japanese collection (square seal with the character Kame ['turtle') appears on most sheets in the album); Fairbanks Family, Boston, Massachusetts; Margaret Wheeler Fairbanks Marchus, (assistant to Sherman Lee, Director of the Cleveland Museum of Art). Born Providence, Rhode Island, later of Boston, Massachusetts and Cleveland, Ohio; The late James Anthony Birch (Curator of Education, Cleveland Museum of Art). Died North Carolina.
