356. Civil War Letter. December 1861. Harper's Ferry, VA. Advancing Towards Leesburg…
"We are about to make another advance towards Leesburg the infantry has been filing along all day and we are waiting on the artillery to start. I was out with a scouting party the other day to the place where we had the skirmish and found there was eight rebels killed. The country people gathered them up and buryed them, some of them had friends living close by." "It is the opinion here the war cannot last long."

357. Civil War Letter. Martinsburg, VA. October 1863. Philosophies on Death
Three page letter from which the following has been excerpted: "There was a lieutenant & we came in contact & exchanged a couple of shots at each other with our pistols when he began to think of number one & started for the mountain. I brought my carbine to bear upon the horse & fired. The horse fell to his knees. Mr. Lieutenant naturally came to the conclusion that the next shot was intended for him & came running back with his hands up hollering I'll surrender I'll surrender. When we are at home in peace & quietness it frequently falls our lot to gaze on the dead body of some one whose soul have taken its flight. Perhaps a friend or a stranger but let it chance to be either there is no one but must give a moment for consideration & perhaps drop a tear but in this cruel war how different- every one trying to be first to strike a death stroke to some poor gray back & then smile at him weltering in his blood."

"We have been out on two reconnaisance since I wrote you last we was very successful on the first scout the official report was 9 rebs killed and several wounded & 25 prisoners. We left Winchester in the morning about daylight with about 600 cavalry, part of the 13th Pa. Cav[alry]; Our scout or guide that we had with us took the man out that belonged to the house in the first place. The man that lived therewas his uncle. He took him out in the yard and called his wife to the door & told her that he wanted here to see him die. Says he you know that he is a bushwhacker & that he shot my father that was his own brother. The woman run in between them he shot her through the arm & killed him. That's the way that bushwhackers is served."
