11. Francois Colin (French, 1798-1864)
Pair of Pastoral Scenes in oval format. Gouache on paper; each signed and dated lower edge, F. Colin 1855; framed, 11 x 13-1/2".
Colin was born in Bordeaux and studied under Pierre Lacour (1745-1814), a highly versatile artist who himself was a student of Vien and taught for years at the Bordeaux Art Academy. Although these two picturesque landscapes by Colin were painted at the midpoint of the 19th century, they possess a strong 18th-century flavor both in the way the paint is handled, and in the careful, almost architectural manner by which the landscape is constructed.

16. Francesco Rinaldi (Italian, b. 1786, active in Rome until 1830)
Putto and Lion in a Landscape. Watercolor on paper; signed lower right, Rinaldi; framed, 6" x 8-3/4".
Francesco Rinaldi was a painter and engraver. The fine detail of this accomplished watercolor, as well as the composition, suggests that the artist intended to engrave the design. The presence of numerous fleurs-de-lis on the drapery suggests that Rinaldi's client for this work was French. To date, Rinaldi's activities outside Italy have not been traced. He is last recorded in Rome around 1830 then virtually disappears from the records. This work may provide evidence that Rinaldi found work in France at some point in his career.
