27. Narcisse Vivien (French, 19th Century)

Rooster and Snails.
Watercolor on paper; signed lower right; matted and framed, 17" x 14-1/2".

Vivien was a noted engraver, and this meticulous watercolor is characteristic of his refined technique. He was born in Paris, where he spent most of his career. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Francais, and received an Honorable Mention in 1886.

Jose Denis Belgrano was born in Malaga, and studied in Rome at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Afterward completing his training, he returned to Spain where he established a successful career painting genre scenes with subjects drawn from the Commedia dell'Arte, and whimsical fetes galantes.
