| 93. Francois Edouard Zier (French, 1856-1924)

Zier was a history, genre and portrait painter who also achieved great success as a commercial illustrator. A student of his father Victor Casinmir Zier and the noted Jean Leon Gerome, Zier debuted at the Paris Salon in 1874, where he became a regular exhibitor. He also exhibited in the Salons des Artistes Francais, receiving an honorable mention in 1884, a third class medal in 1900, and a second class medal in 1904. He served as secretary of the organization in 1894.
In addition to his work as a fine artist, Zier was a prolific illustrator. He regularly contributed to the "Le Courrier Francais", "L'Illustration", "Le Monde Illustre." He also illustrated a number of children's novels. Zier typically signed his work only with his middle and last name, either "Ed. Zier" or "Edouard Zier" as in the case of the present work.
