| 25. Jan Sadeler, Flemish, 1550-1600
After Maarten de Vos, Flemish, 1532-1603. Genesis: Chapter IV, Verse V. Engraving on paper, trimmed to border and mounted on paper, unframed. 9 1/2" x 11 1/2".
This print and the two others by Sadeler/de Vos in this sale were illustrations for the Illustrated Bible, "Thesaurus Veteris et Novi Testimenti" first published in 1585 by Gerard de Jode, and published in a revised 17th-century edition in Amsterdam by Claes Jansz Visscher and later by his sons.
This print is inscribed in the plate as depicting Genesis Chapter IV, Verse V: "But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell." Although the engraving seems to match this chapter and verse, the Biblical text in Latin below the plate corresponds instead to Genesis Chapter V, Verses 12 to 18 dealing with Adam and Eve's progeny.
Provenance: Collection of Harry L. Jackson.
