| 26. Jan Sadeler, Flemish, 1550-1600
After Maarten de Vos, Flemish, 1532-1603. Genesis: Chapter IV, Verse VIII. Engraving on paper, trimmed to border and mounted on paper border, unframed. 9 1/8" x 11 3/4".
This engraving and the two others by Sadeler/de Vos in this sale were illustrations for the Illustrated Bible, "Thesaurus Veteris et Novi Testimenti" first published in 1585 by Gerard de Jode, and published in a revised 17th-century edition in Amsterdam by Claes Jansz Visscher and later by his sons.
Even though this print is inscribed in the plate as depicting Genesis Chapter IV, Verse VIII, it actually depicts Chapter IV, Verses 17 and 18: "And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch. And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech." These two verses are inscribed in Latin below the image.
Provenance: Collection of Harry L.Jackson.
