37. Michele Lucchese (1553-1604) after Raphael Sanzio, Italian 1483-1520
Michele Lucchese (Michele Greco) after the right side of Raphael's design for the fresco, "The Council of the Gods," in the Villa Farnesina, Rome (completed in 1518). Engraving, initialed by engraver middle left "M. L. cum privilegio Raphael Urbino", matted and framed. 14 3/4" x 21" image size.
Like most engravings after Raphael, this print seems to have been made from a preparatory drawing by Raphael rather than after the finished fresco. The engraving closely follows Raphael's drawing of the subject in the Institut Neerlandais, Paris. For a photograph of the Raphael drawing, see John Pope-Hennessy, Raphael, Haprer and Row, New York, 1970, p. 21. On Lucchese, see Passavant, VI, pp. 166-8.
