203. Covarrubias, Miguel (Mexican, 1904-1957)
Three Prints of African-Americans


Three black and white caricature portraits. Miguel Covarrubias was a painter, writer and anthropologist. In 1923, he went to New York City on a government scholarship; his caricatures appeared in "Vanity Fair" and "Fortune" magazines and a collection of his caricatures was published under the title "The Prince of Wales and Other Famous Americans." (1925) He traveled extensively during his life, focussing on racial types in Bali, India, Viet Nam and Africa. In addition, Covarrubias taught at the Escuela Nacional de Anthropologia in Mexico City; served as director of an art school; and designed theater sets.
