236. Rowlandson, Thomas (British, 1756-1827)
Royal Cock Pit

London: R. Ackerman, 1808
Original hand colored etching, nicely matted and framed. Born in 1756, Thomas Rowlandson was the son of a successful London businessman. Originally, Rowlandson established himself as a portrait painter, but his heavy gambling caused him to develop a sideline as caricaturist. He paid his gambling debts with drawings of popular and low-life subjects such as cock fighting. His work was published in journals, and he illustrated books for Henry Fielding, Oliver Goldsmith, Laurence Sterne and Tobias George Smollett. Additionally, Rowlandson often got into legal trouble because of his political cartoons. In 1808, Rowlandson began working with the lithographer Rudolph Ackermann. Together they published "Microcosm of London," a book published in three volumes between 1808 and 1811, depicting life in London. While Augustus Pugin often supplied the drawings of buildings, Rowlandson painted the people into the pictures. Rowlandson died in 1827.
