75. Capone, Alphonsus Sepia-tone 6 in. by 10 in. photograph inscribed by Al Capone
Signed by To my Pal Jack Ulmer From Al Capone.
c. 1920: A youthful Capone inscribed this photograph to his friend Jack Ulmer. The latter went on to become the dance champion of Madison Square Garden in 1927 and later, a champion boxer. Capone took to a more deadly arena, but lost his last contest to the meek accountants at the Internal Revenue Service. He is shown here handsomely dressed before a silk-faced screen with a friendly smile; hardly recognizable as the pudgy mobster he was to become. Provenance: The family of Mr. Ulmer. Accompanied by a rather long but undated newspaper article about the recipient.
