11. Dwight, Timothy
The Folly, Guilt, and Mischiefs of Duelling(sic): a Sermon, Preached in the College Chapel at New Haven. Publisher: Hudson and Goodwin 1805. 19th Century Binding: half calf with marbled boards. Original wraps retained, professionally repaired.
Dwight, the president of Yale college, delivered this 30-page admonishment in conjunction with the annual commencement. He wrote of the major social ill: "Duelling is a violation of the laws of man..." Concerning the duelist, he asked, "Is he a son? Who licensed him in rebellion against the fifth command of the decalogue, to pierce his parents hearts with agony, and to bring down their gray hairs with sorrow to the grave? Is he a husband? He has broken the marriage vow; the oath of God. He has forsaken the wife of his youth. He has refused to furnish her sustanance; to share her joys; and to provide for his children, and hers, the means of living here, and the means of living forever."
