| 676. Dore, Gustave
Fables of La Fontaine Publisher: Cassell, Petter & Galpinc. 1880 decorated gilt blue cloth, wear to head and tail, hinges loose, corners bumped, general wear, interior clean. Although he was never an easel painter of the highest order, Gustave Dore (1832-1883) distinguished himself as one of the premier illustrators of the 19th century. This outstanding example of his skill as a draftsman and designer is one of his best-known works along with his illustrations for Rabelais, Balzac's Contes Drolatiques, for Don Quixote, the Bible and the Divine Comedy.
