Wooded Landscape.
Oil on canvas, signed lower right, framed.
12-1/2" x 17-1/2".

1,000/2,000     SOLD: $460.00

Parisian-born landscape painter Gabriel Mathieu worked in a feathery, expressive manner which evoked a strong sense of atmosphere and time of day. He excelled at painting meadows, woodlands and river scenes which depend upon a skillful handling of a green/yellow palette--one that is often quite difficult to manage without garish results. The present work is characteristic of the type of image for which he was most celebrated. Mathieu exhibited regularly in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Francais, where he received a number of medals.

Condition: Yellowed varnish and surface soil; small flaking area on one tree near center.
