Portrait of a Gentleman.
Oil on canvas, unsigned, not framed.
36" x 29".

1,000/2,000     SOLD: $862.50

This English portrait of a gentleman reading The Leeds Mercury is composed according to the European formula of the 18th century popularized by such figures as John Hoppner, Henry Raeburn and Joshua Reynolds. The sitter is placed at an angle to the viewer, with a billowing red drapery behind him, and a glimpse of landscape or seascape visible through the window to one side. The arrangement gives the sitter an aura of importance and prominence.

Condition: Pigment losses on perimeter, heavily crazed and soiled surface, evidence of old restorations.
