Stone was a genre and portrait painter who immigrated to the United States at age six. His art training was highly cosmopolitan: he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, with the notable figure artist Anders Zorn in Sweden, with Jules Lefebre in Paris, and in London with the noted American expatriot portraitist John Singer Sargent. He enjoyed a considerable reputation both in America and in Europe for his portraits. The present work, no doubt a figure study madde directly from the model, was painted in Munich in 1907.
Condition: Surface soil and grime, relined, very minor spots of inpainting.
