420. A Turkoman Tekke Carpet, 19th Century

The central field woven with three rows of traditional large guls alternating with smaller guls, inside various borders woven with traditional Turkoman patterning, all in dark red, white, navy, hunter green, and marigold. Wool pile on wool warp. 44" x 54".

Note: Gul means "flower" in Persian. The varying shapes and designs of guls usually reflect a tribal origin.
