424. A Caucasian Brocade Bag, 20th Century

The central field brocade woven with strips of geometric motifs and stylized animals and figures, inside numerous borders of geometric motifs. Tassels with bright turquoise clay beads are applied at every corner and one in the center of the bottom piece. Braided loops have been attached inside the open end, probably to attach to a saddle for carrying, all in red, pink, black, white, yellow, purple, and blue on a brown ground. Wool. 27" x 32".

One side woven as a kilim in plain red, the second (front) side pile woven with interlacing geometric motifs inside a border of bow tie motifs, all in red, white, green, and orange. Wool pile on wool warp. 21" x 40".

426. A Turkish Soumak Saddlebag, 20th Century

On one side, each panel is woven with a central rectangle inside of which is a central interlocking diamond motif. The rectangle is bordered by two small zig-zag borders and a primary border woven in strips of geometric motifs and stylized birds. On the second side (with pouch openings) each panel is woven with a central square of geometric motifs surrounded by numerous geometric borders. Each side of the bag has four attached tassels, the ends of the bag have pile woven edges. Wool warp, wool weft. 16" x 36".

Woven in the center with two figures on either side of three plants on stands, the left figure standing in traditional garb with a hat, the right figure seated in traditional garb with a flower garland on her head, hands crossed on her lap, all in a field of urns on stands issuing flowers, shells, wheels, and other geometric motifs, all in rich dark blue, brown, red, gold, gray, and plum.
