Arthur Gilbert was a prolific landscape painter particularly noted for his descriptive scenes of Scotland and Wales. The present work records picturesque Mont St. Michel located just off the coast of Brittany. The artist was the son of the celebrated landscape and miniature painter Edward Williams (1782-1855), who fathered a dynasty of artists. Since Edward Williams was so well known, three of his sons, including Arthur (author of the present work) chose to change their names to avoid confusion with other members of their family. Arthur Williams chose the surname Gilbert. Two of Gilbert's children also became painters--Horace Walter and Kate Elizabeth.

Gilbert was active in London, and exhibited his work regularly at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and Suffolk Street from 1838 to 1894. Two of Gilbert's landscapes are in the permanent collection of the Glasgow City Art Gallery, Scotland.

Condition: Acidic matting, and surface soil.
