15. A Silver Gilt Enameled Salt Throne, Nicholai Alexeyev, Moscow, Russia, Late 19th Century
In the form of a stylized Russian izba, with slanted enamel rafters surmounted by two cloisonne roosters, the rest enameled in turquoise, red, light blue, and cobalt with stylized geometric patterns in champleve enamel, the hinged lid inscribed in Cyrillic "L.I. Mandel", opening to reveal the interior, inscribed "From the Trading Firm of Novikov, Egorov, and Co., September 3, 1894", raised over four ball feet, stamped with makers and date marks. 7 1/2" h., 3 1/2" w., 3 3/4" d.

The architectural form finely engraved with scenes from the life of Christ, the rectangular base engraved in Cyrillic, celebrating Saints Nicholas, Andrei, Yefimy, Anna, John, and Mary, applied with two figures of angels, surmounted with an oval repousse medallion depicting the Resurrection of Christ, the upper portion of the reliquary opening to reveal two compartments, raised on four scroll legs, hallmarked. 13 1/4" h.

20. A Russian Icon, Mother Of God Of The Sign, or Ortana, Early 18th Century
Painted on wood panel, encased in a silver chased, engraved and repousee riza with two family saints flanking on outer borders. The iconographic subject is based on a prophecy by Isaiah, "Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign; behold, a virgin shall conceive in the womb, and shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Emmanuel." (Isaiah VII, 14). This is the sign announced to the world.

An icon depicting "Dormition of the Mother of God" (The Assumption. Mary is shown lying on her deathbed surrounded by the Apostles and Christ receiving Mary's soul in her arms, surrounded by the Mandorla Six Winged Angels, representing heavenly virtues. Thew company also includes two bishops. In the upper center is a small representation of The Assumption. In the center foreground is an armed angel and Athonios who dared to touch the funeral couch. Oil on wood panel with gold leaf. 12 1/4", 10 1/4", 3/4" d.
