169. Henri Dagneau (French, 19th Century)

Still Life of Late Summer Flowers and Fruit.
Oil on canvas, signed lower left, dated 1874, framed, 21" x 18".

Dagneau was born in Middelburg, Holland to French parents. Interestingly, his still life compositions are a curious blend of French and Dutch motifs and conventions. The Turkish carpet covering the table is a traditional prop in 17th-century Dutch painting, while the preference for two or more vessels containing floral arrangements is more typically 18th-century French in origin. Dagneau's still lifes are generally very colorful and possess a wide spectrum of floral varieties. In the present work, the bright orange nasturtiums make a lively contrast with the blue of the pitcher.
