20. A Russian Icon, Mother Of God Of The Sign, or Ortana, Early 18th Century

Painted on wood panel, encased in a silver chased, engraved and repousee riza with two family saints flanking on outer borders. The iconographic subject is based on a prophecy by Isaiah, "Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign; behold, a virgin shall conceive in the womb, and shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Emmanuel." (Isaiah VII, 14). This is the sign announced to the world. 12 1/2" x 10 1/2" x 1".
