This issue of View, as well as having the smoking bottle cover designed by Duchamp, also carried the first English translations of a number of classic essays on Duchamp; Andre Breton's "Lighthouse of the Bride"; Gabrielle Buffet's "Magic Circles"; Robert Desnos' "Rrose Selavy"; as well as contributions by curator James Thrall Soby, art dealers Harriet and Sidney Janis & Nicolas Calas. Also includes Frederick J. Kiesler's "Les Larves d'Imagie d'Henri Robert Marcel Duchamp", a triptych when unfolded represents the three walls of Duchamp's studio on 14th Street in New York. The cut-out flaps, when bent toward the centre, transform the interior wall into a vision of the "Mariee mise a nu". [Schwarz, cat. no. 508].This deluxe copy of View not only has the signed Pharmacy print, but also contains, on the front endpaper, the signatures of all the eighteen contributors to the Duchamp issue including: Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy, Man Ray, Joseph Cornell, Parker Tyler, James Thrall Soby, Charles Henri Ford, Mina Loy, Leon Kochnitzky, Nicholas Calas, André Breton, Hans Richter, Harriet Janis, Sidney Janis, Maya Deren, John Myers, Julien Levy & R.A. 10. Duchamp, Marcel
Coffee Mill etching for Du Cubisme

Signed by MARCEL DUCHAMP in plate at lower left.

after 1947

Cancelled plate impression numbered in pencil. No. 195 of 200.
Matte size: 12" x 9". Plate size 7" x 3-1/8".

This image has an interesting and rather involved history within Duchamps' oeuvre. It began as a painting (oil on cardboard) which Duchamp created for his brother Raymond Duchamp-Villion's kitchen in Neuilly, France in November and December of 1911 (ill. in Schwarz, cat. no. 178; the painting is now in the collection of The Tate Gallery, London). In 1912, Duchamp's other brother, the sculptor Jacques Villon, made an etching after the painting which was reproduced as a photogravure in the Cubist manifesto "Du Cubisme" by Albert Gleizes and Jean Metzinger, Eugene Figuiere et Cie, Paris. In 1947, "Du Cubisme" was republished in a limited edition of 455 copies with eleven original etchings, including the Coffee Mill. Subsequently, a cancelled edition of the Coffee Mill etching numbering 200 was issued, of which this is impression no. 195.

Provenance:
Ferdinand Roten Galleries, Baltimore, Maryland (mat bears gallery sticker as well as stock number 97-523-195);
