65. Rilke, Rainer Maria and Ben Shahn For the Sake of a Single Verse - from the Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge.
Signed by Ben Shahn..
New York: Atelier Mourlot for the Ben Shahn Trust, 1968 Limited Edition. Elephant Folio.
No. 144 of 750. This being 1 of 200 with each of the 22 lithographs signed in brown-ochre ink by Ben Shahn (1898-1969). The text Shahn illustrated is selected from M.D. Herter Norton's English translation of "Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge" by Rilke. The German poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) wrote this work over a three-year period (1904-1907). Its theme is his protagonist's (and alter ego's) journey to find not only the meaning of life but also the meaning of art. The quest of Malte Laurids Brigge greatly appealed to American painter and graphic artist Ben Shahn, known both for his social realism (notably his paintings on the Sacco-Vanzetti Case) as well as his highly lyrical abstractions. In an afterward to this handsome edition of Rilke's masterwork which he illustrated with bold lithographs characteristic of his trademark economy of means, Shahn described his emotional engagement with its message: "I was twenty-eight years old; I had just recently arrived in Paris. I had certainly never heard of Rainer Maria Rilke when I found on one of the bookstalls along the Seine a small volume called "Les Cahiers de Malte Laurids Brigge." I was entranced by the writer's observations, not just upon Paris, but on life itself. Malte Brigge had only just arrived in Paris when the notebooks began. He too was twenty-eight. This young man seemed almost to be me [. . .] But there were other and more profound reasons for this kinship. Like every young artist under the sun, I was intent upon finding the deep and abiding way of things. I read the constantly proliferating art literature of the late Twenties in Paris--the manifestos, the tracts, the declarations, the testaments, the confessions, the diaries, the autobiographies, the monographs, always seeking the clue, the magic key to what was what, the elusive ingredient that made art, art, and not just more paint upon canvas, more filled-up space."
