110. Jules Cheret (French, 1826-1932)
"Musee Grevin: Souvenir De L'Exposition 1890". Lithograph in colors (Briodo 466) on joined wove paper, stone signed, framed. 93-1/2" x 34-1/2".Cheret was one of the key figures in the development of the French poster style at the end of the 19th century. Influenced inititally by the work of Toulouse-Lautrec, Cheret eventually moved beyond impressionistic techniques, adopting a quite distinctive elegance of line and a very sophisticated sense of color harmony. Although best known for his striking "affiche" designs such as the present lot, Cheret was also an extremely accomplished landscape painter--an aspect of his career which remains largely unrecognized.
