110. Jules Cheret (French, 1826-1932)

"Musee Grevin: Souvenir De L'Exposition 1890".
Lithograph in colors (Briodo 466) on joined wove paper, stone signed, framed.
93-1/2" x 34-1/2".Cheret was one of the key figures in the development of the French poster style at the end of the 19th century. Influenced inititally by the work of Toulouse-Lautrec, Cheret eventually moved beyond impressionistic techniques, adopting a quite distinctive elegance of line and a very sophisticated sense of color harmony. Although best known for his striking "affiche" designs such as the present lot, Cheret was also an extremely accomplished landscape painter--an aspect of his career which remains largely unrecognized.

118. Louis Orr (American, 1879-1961)

Dartmouth College Suite.
Nine etchings of the college, including the title page, each signed in pencil, matted and framed.
20" x 15" overall framed.

Louis Orr was educated in Paris and spent most of his career in France. Although he was a mural painter, Orr participated in the 19th-century etching revival which began in France with Whistler and in England with Seymour Hayden. Orr produced in series, as did Whistler. One of his best known etching suites was his 28 views of Reims Cathedral of 1917. He also etched a series of Paris Views and Ports of America.
