11. Alphaeus Philemon Cole (American, 1876-1989)
The Early Bird. Oil on canvas, signed lower left, framed. 12" x 16".
Note: Salmagundi Club Fall Exhibition tag on reverse.
Cole was born in England, and studied in Paris at the Academie Julien under Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant, and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Francais, at the Royal Academy in London, and in numerous New York shows, including the Salmagundi Club where he exhibited the current painting. He was a member of the National Academy of Design, and served as President of the New York Watercolor Society. Cole's work in oil often possesses a fresh, rather liquid quality that betrays his penchant for watercolor. Such effects are apparent in the present work.

12. Joseph Foxcroft Cole (Anglo/American, 1837-1892)

A painter of genre scenes and landscapes, Cole studied in France with Lambinet between 1860 and 1863, and with the well-known Barbizon landscapist and animal painter Charles Jacque in 1867. He worked for many years in France, before establishing himself in Boston, Massachusetts. Like Jacque, Cole often painted woodland subjects but with a more lyrical, delicate touch.

17. Ludwig Augustin (Austrian, 1882-1960)
"Curiosity". Oil on masonite, signed lower left, framed, 17" x 15".
This work depicting a cardinal contemplating books and objets d'art in his study was a popular subject of Ludwig Augustin. The figures in his interior genre scenes are usually clerics or aristocrats in historical dress--typically from the 18th or 19th century. In its high degree of finish and choice of subject, Augustin's work is decidedly 19th century in feeling.

18. Augustus Edwin Mulready (British, died 1886)
Young Lady at the London Docks. Oil on artists board, signed lower right, framed. 9-1/2" x 6".,
Mulready was a genre painter active in London in the mid-19th Century. He exhibited at London's Royal Academy expositions between 1863 and 1886. His paintings often feature children who seem to come straight from the novels of Charles Dickens. In the present work, a young waifish girl, who is loaded down with boxes and baggage, has apparently been sent off to make her way in the world. The poster advertising a voyage to America may well indicate her intended destination.
