| 11. Alphaeus Philemon Cole (American, 1876-1989)
The Early Bird. Oil on canvas, signed lower left, framed. 12" x 16".
Note: Salmagundi Club Fall Exhibition tag on reverse.
Cole was born in England, and studied in Paris at the Academie Julien under Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant, and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Francais, at the Royal Academy in London, and in numerous New York shows, including the Salmagundi Club where he exhibited the current painting. He was a member of the National Academy of Design, and served as President of the New York Watercolor Society. Cole's work in oil often possesses a fresh, rather liquid quality that betrays his penchant for watercolor. Such effects are apparent in the present work.
