A painter of genre scenes and landscapes, Cole studied in France with Lambinet between 1860 and 1863, and with the well-known Barbizon landscapist and animal painter Charles Jacque in 1867. He worked for many years in France, before establishing himself in Boston, Massachusetts. Like Jacque, Cole often painted woodland subjects but with a more lyrical, delicate touch.
