This work depicting a cardinal contemplating books and objets d'art in his study was a popular subject of Ludwig Augustin. The figures in his interior genre scenes are usually clerics or aristocrats in historical dress--typically from the 18th or 19th century. In its high degree of finish and choice of subject, Augustin's work is decidedly 19th century in feeling.
