| 18. Augustus Edwin Mulready (British, died 1886)
Young Lady at the London Docks. Oil on artists board, signed lower right, framed. 9-1/2" x 6".,
Mulready was a genre painter active in London in the mid-19th Century. He exhibited at London's Royal Academy expositions between 1863 and 1886. His paintings often feature children who seem to come straight from the novels of Charles Dickens. In the present work, a young waifish girl, who is loaded down with boxes and baggage, has apparently been sent off to make her way in the world. The poster advertising a voyage to America may well indicate her intended destination.
