| 266. A Fine Large Glass Sculpture by Jose Chardiet (Cuban, born 1956)
"Summer Vase". The baluster form tapering toward the foot, the bright red glass walls overlaid with mottled emerald green, red, and white, with a chartreuse concentric spiral design around the form, the vase shoulder modeled with applied cicada and other insect-like forms, each incorporating bits of metal as antennae, legs, and body parts, alternating between elongated zig-zags cut back to the bright red ground. 19 1/4" h.
Provenance: Marx Saunders Gallery, Ltd., Chicago.
An important Ohio collection.
The brilliant reds, pinks and turquoises in Jose Chardiet's Summer Vase of 1993 evoke the heat of the season, while the motifs appearing in raised relief suggest its sounds. Cicadas occur where the vase is at its broadest. Emanating from the body of the insect are arching red bands which describe its drilling "buzz."
Jose Chardiet was born in Havana in 1956, and immigrated to the United States at the age of four.
