309. A Fine Tiffany Favrile Glass and Gilt Bronze Filigree Poppy Lamp, circa 1899-1918

The conical shade with three panel border; composed of an undulating pattern of budding and blooming poppy blossoms in fiery striated orange and red glass, with leaves in opalescent blue green on a mottled chartreuse ground, with blossom centers on the exterior overlaid with gilt bronze filigree, the bottom leaf border overlaid with gilt bronze filigree, raised on a partial gilded turtleback tile bronze base. The shade impressed Tiffany Studios New York 7531, the base impressed Tiffany Studios New York 587. 24" h., Shade diameter 20".

Provenance: private collection by descent in the family.

This Favrile glass and gilt bronze poppy lamp on a bronze turtleback base was produced by Louis Comfort Tiffany's Tiffany Studios, New York, between 1899 and 1918. Tiffany (1848-1933) was one of the leading figures in the American art glass movement in the late 19th and early 20th century. He ascribed to the Arts and Crafts aesthetic which championed the production of fine hand-craftsmanship within the decorative arts, and strove to raise the standards of designs for everyday objects used in the home.

Gilded bronze lamps were the most expensive variety of lamp one could purchase from Tiffany. Silver gilt was 10% over the cost of the regular bronze, and gilt bronze was priced up yet another notch at 20% above the cost of regular bronze.

This lamp is one of the most unusual of its type in that the filigree is on the underside of the shade rather than on the exterior. Owing to its position beneath the glass, the interior filigree gives the shade a softer look, and creates a more realistic effect in the veining of the leaves. The poppy design is one of the most desirable of all the shade patterns. The motif on this particular shade is well planned, the selection of glass is good, and the way the buds match up is both artful and pleasing. This particular lamp has remained continuously in the family of the private collector who originally purchased it from Tiffany.
